  • Position Overview

    The Peer Specialist will;

    • Promote problem solving and decision making skill development, particularly in the areas of drug use, sexual risk reduction, symptom management, and medication treatment.
    • Participate in peer support group and raise participant awareness of existing services, pathways to recovery and help them to remove barriers that exist for access to services and supportive housing.
    • Establish and maintain appropriate staff/consumer boundaries and direct consumers to the appropriate staff or department in order to address their needs.
    • Provide guidance and information to consumers around the daily activity schedule, House Rules, Program Policies and Procedures, Grievance Procedures, and Client Rights.
    • Monitor consumer behavior to ensure compliance with House Rules, Program Policies, and Procedures.
    • Accompany and escort clients to appointments.
    • Maintain that client information is confidential and adhere to procedures pertaining to compliance with HIPAA Privacy Regulations.
    • Build rapport and utilize motivational interviewing strategies to support vulnerable people with moving through the stages of change and accepting an offer of housing.
    • Participate in and assist in monitoring activity in the shelter and the consumers in the facility.
    • Provide guidance to consumers in proper upkeep of living quarters, personal hygiene and grooming, attendance at meals, medication adherence, and participation in group activities.
    • Assist in Residential Aide duties and with special events.
    • Participate in and collaborate to develop a group schedule and curriculum
    • Respond to crisis and emergency situations and contact the appropriate authorities as needed.
    • Assist House Managers with fire drills and building evacuations during emergencies and provide consumer with fire safety and prevention information as needed.
    • Participate in ongoing individual supervision, team meetings, and internal/external trainings as appropriate.
    • Adhere to on call system to facilitate crisis intervention, emergencies, and other situations that require immediate action.
    • Maintain CPR/ First Aid Certification.
    • A work schedule that includes weekend and evening hours will be required. Additional shifts required as needed.
    • Perform other duties related to the program as delegated.

    Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or GED or 2 years of experience working in a large residential/institutional setting with a special needs population is required.
    • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills required.
    • Must have patience, creativity, flexibility, compassion, and sensitivity to persons with mental health and substance abuse issues and criminal court involvement.
