Position Overview

Services for the UnderServed (SUS) is a New York-based nonprofit organization that provides housing and support services to 25,000 individuals and their families living in New York City and Long Island.  SUS believes every New Yorker has the right to lead a life of purpose.

Position Overview:

The successful Design Associate candidate will work along with the Designer to develop new properties.

The Scope of the Work includes: Permanent, transitional, and urgent housing: large and mid-size apartment buildings, small houses for 4 to 8 people, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, homeless shelters, day programs, and large and small office spaces.


Essential Functions:


This role will encompass work in the following areas:


Exteriors and Interiors including and not limited to:

  • Design spaces: work with architects, develop an overall vision and choose flooring, cabinetry, counters, bathroom tiling, etc., and colors and finishes
  • Select and design furniture: styles, fabrics, and wood/metal finishes, select wall art, window treatments, flat screens, appliances, etc.


Maintain and upgrade existing properties, including and not limited to:

  • Replace furniture
  • Design construction upgrades, modifications, build-outs

Additional Functions May Include:

Liaising with:

  • Executive and Senior Department staff, and Finance – regarding budgets and direction
  • Program Management – regarding deliveries, set-ups, installations, removal and disposals
  • Central Maintenance – regarding installations, purchasing trips for large quantities and over-size pieces
  • IT – regarding layouts or data and electrical lines, Cable TV
  • Fleet Manager – regarding vehicle maintenance


Other functions to include: 

  • Create and maintain site folders including:
  • Word documents
  • Bid sheets for Purchasing (furniture) and Real Estate, contractor’s (scope of work)
  • finish schedules for architects and contractors, upgrade notes, furniture worksheets
  • save PO’s and vendor’s quotes
  • Bell entries for Purchasing
  • Works – P card sign offs
  • Excel project worksheets with items and time-linesMaintain library of vendor product binders and finish samples, color palettes and finish samples for open projects



  • Bachelor’s Degree, fine arts or interior design preferred
  • 2-3 years In the Architecture and Design field
  • Have a background and/or interest working in human services
  • Experience in designing interiors from the ground up
  • Experience in the Real Estate industry preferred
  • Driver’s License required and must be able to pass insurance criteria
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Outlook preferred
  • Knowledge of CAD and Revit is preferred
