Position Overview

Eco-City Landscaping is a for-profit company which will operate as a fully -owned affiliate of Services for the UnderServed, Inc. a New York City-based 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.

SUS SUBSIDIARY: Eco-City Landscaping Business Manager. The Business Manager IS required to work independently to rapidly scale a start-up landscape services business and see it to maturity, while overseeing its daily operations.

The key responsibilities are:

  • Business development/sales, including short and long term business marketing plans and execution. This means seeking new clients, and expanding relationships with existing clients.
  • Back office management, including developing, obtaining, and maintaining account records (service contracts, certificates of insurance, permits, etc), invoicing and collections.
  • Customer relations including service interactions by email, phone, or in-person. This also includes working with clients to develop and refine project or service plans.
  • Financial management, including budgeting, development of project estimates, and job costing reviews.
  • Personnel management, including hiring, scheduling, timesheet management, payroll management, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions. This will also include training employees and developing procedures and as needed, particularly for safety procedures.
  • Operations management, including working with and supervising crew leaders to plan, schedule, and execute all work to ensure proper and efficient completion of assignments.
  • Inspecting all work on an ongoing basis, including safe and proper horticultural practices by personnel, and to insure quality and proper completion of work on schedule.
  • Logistical planning, including acquiring, maintaining, and coordinating vehicles and equipment, and ordering and organizing delivery of supplies.
  • Vendor relations, including establishing and maintaining relationships with, and negotiating prices with, nurseries, material providers, landscape architects and designers, and subcontractors.



Candidates for the Business Manager position should demonstrate:

  • Experience in a customer driven and client-focused organization.
  • Strong organization, leadership, and project management skills.
  • Business financial management experience, including budgeting and job costing for horticultural services.
  • Knowledge of safe operating practices in horticultural services.

Applicants must have at a minimum:

  • 5 years of supervisory experience in a landscaping services business, OR
  • A degree in business management, horticulture, or another relevant field, with at least 3 years of supervisory experience in land care services business.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.           

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Previous supervisory roles in a start-up environment, with demonstrated success in scaling a business.
  • Previous experience working with land care services in an urban environment.
  • Experience or training in landscape design.
  • Advanced degree in business management, horticulture, or another relevant field.
  • Professional certifications and/or training applicable to horticultural services.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in working with individuals with disabilities.
