Position Overview

Service for the Underserved, Inc. (S:US) is a dynamic and growing social service and housing agency with over 40+ years of experience in providing housing and services to the most vulnerable in New York City.

The Real Estate team at S:US is tasked with maintaining and expanding S:US’ large and diverse Real Estate portfolio. Our team’s goal is to fulfill S:US’ commitment to reducing homelessness and providing a life of purpose by ensuring all of our residents have a safe, clean, affordable place to call home, and all our staff have the right work environment to carry out the mission. This is an excitingxcitinetime for the Real Estate Team as S:US has a dynamic and growing pipeline of affordable and supportive housing, with 700 units in construction and another 1500 in predevelopment.  S:US is among the largest providers of supportive housing in New York State and nationally.

 

Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Deputy Director of Housing Development, the Housing Development Intern will help create a Design Guidelines Handbook that will guide the organization's growing $1.4 billion multifamily portfolio pipeline. The Housing Development Intern will also participate in the development processes for new construction projects and rehabilitation projects within the S:US Real Estate Portfolio. The Housing Development Intern will work within the Real Estate and Housing Development Team and with other S:US stakeholders to create a comprehensive design standards document and advance projects in the pipeline towards a loan closing and through construction. 

Key Essential Functions:

  • Help development team compile a Design Guidelines Handbook that will guide the organization's growing $1.4 billion multifamily portfolio pipeline.
  • The S:US Design Guidelines Handbook will cover the following for both New Construction (NC) and Rehabilitations (Rehabs)
    • Preferred product specifications (appliances, hardware, fixtures, materials)
    • Preferred finishes
    • Preferred color schemes
    • Security and access sequence standards for construction
    • Standard safety considerations
    • Balcony and terraces
    • General unit design preferences
    • Common space design preferences
    • Office space standards for IT
    • IT connections and equipment standards
    • DVR and security camera standards
  • Develop materials such as handouts or decks for community stakeholder meetings and attend meetings.
  • Help development team finalize scoping for the OMH1 Rehab Project.
  • Assist with administrative items and organizationas needed.
  • Assist with financing applications if applicable. 
  • Assist with organizing the Real Estate and Housing Development Team’s closing documents and memos.
  • Attend Owner Architect Contractor meetings as applicable.
  • Attend Construction site visitsas applicable.

Qualifications

Education / Training Required:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Passionate about the S:US mission generally and provision of supportive housing in particular
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Highly organized, detail oriented and self-motivated.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communicator with a collaborative, problem solving approach
  • Self starter; ability to work as part of a team and also independently
